We had planned to found the “European Idealist” political party in Germany on Saturday, 3 February in Nuremberg.
Due to a last-minute cancellation by one key person on Friday evening and the subsequent loss of belief that it was the right time to found by another key person, made it inevitable to call off the founding at 11 p.m. on 2 February. This not only cancelled the founding of the party, at least for the time being, but also the possibility of participating in this year’s European elections.
The main reason we had somewhat rushed the founding was our belief that the European Parliamentary with its relatively low bar for participation in the election was the best chance to create a viable political base for the strategically crucial German parliamentary elections of the Bundestag in 2025 and beyond. And also for the spread of our new type of party to other European countries, once we were established in Germany.
Now there not only is no need to hurry with the founding, but also time to go back to the drawing board and have a rethink about the best way to fight for our core principles of humanism with its top dimensions security, climate/environment, reduction of extreme social inequality, as well as for better governance and European unification. And for a strategic change in German and European security policy, a real turning point, or “Zeitenwende”, that is fully focussed on Ukraine’s victory in the war and on protecting all of Europe from any threat.
We may decide to found our party at a later date. Better prepared, with a revised programme and with more critical mass in terms of founding members.
Or we might join forces with others to create a political group to better achieve the most pressing changes necessary, such as supporting Ukraine through victory and beyond and preparing our own democracies to be more resilient and able to actively defend themselves against aggressive autocracies trying to destroy them.
Or we may choose other ways to continue the fight. Or any combination of these approaches.
